How To's

How To Read Casting Numbers

There Are Three Places to look
Intake Manifold
Cylinder Heads
Block
The first character of the number
is the decade in which part was
produced.
A-1940's
B-1950's
C-1960's
D-1970's
E-1980's

The 2nd character tells us what
year of that decade part was
produced. Using my example says
that the D1VE part was
manufactured in the year 1971.

The 3rd character tells us what
model of car/truck part was
designed for.
(A) full size Ford
(C) Torino/Elite
(J) Industrial engine
(M) Mercury
(S) Thunderbird
(T) Truck
(U) Econoline van
(V) Lincoln.

The 4th character tells what
division released the part.
(A) Chassis div.
(B) Body div.
(E) engine division.
(M) SVO Motorsport div.
(X) Former muscle parts or SVO production.

There are base codes that
designate what type of
engine part we have. On
all these parts there is
a smaller 4 digit number
that tells us the day of
manufacture, example 6O15.

1st character is again year
of the decade.
2nd character is the month
code. They go in
alphabetical order(except
they leave out the letter
"I")
A- Jan.
B- Feb.
C-March
and so on.

3rd & 4th characters
are the day code,
our's is 15.
So now if you did everything right. You should get that this block was made out of a 1971 lincoln out of the Engine Division casting. And produced in 1976 on Febuary the 15th.

RPM's

With stock rod bolts and cast pistons I wouldn't go much past 5,000 RPM. With ARP rod bolts on CJ or truck rods and some good forged pistons, you can rev to 6,200-6,500 RPM safely. From reports I hear.

But if i was able to invest into some good H-Beam Rods, ex. Eagle ESP, I would feel alot better about taking my engine in the higher revs.

Coonecting Rods

Ford made 2 different types of connecting rods for the 429-460. One set was for the cars. Then there was another set for the trucks and the Cobra Jet cars. There is minor differences between the two. The most noticable and easiest way to find out is looking at the top of the rod bolts. If they are foot ball shaped, like the ones you see above to the right, those are the Truck/CJ rods. The ones on the left, as you guessed, are the car rods.
